Viking - Our Viking seedling plants are grown from seed collected by Akiva Silver at Twisted Tree Farm. Viking was developed in Europe as an orchard plant and is a multi-stemmed, medium-sized 4-6’ bush that produces abundant quantities of plump black berries in late-summer.

This adaptable native plant is great for hedgerows, riparian plantings and wildlife. It can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions including wet and boggy soils. The brilliant white spring blossoms transition to nutrient-dense blueberry-sized black berries in late-summer and the leaves turn a vibrant red in the fall. Berries aren’t the best fresh eating but are packed with antioxidants and can be used for juice, pies, jams, etc.

Aronia are widely-adapted and easy to grow. Established plants produce root suckers that can be divided to produce additional plants. Aronia are self-fertile and only one plant is required for fruit, but additional plants will enhance yields. Some cultivars of aronia, such as Viking, come true from seed, in which case plants grown from seed will resemble the parent plant.
